Fellowships and residencies for physical therapy and occupational/hand therapy

The Institute for Athletic Medicine offers 13 month (August 1-August 31) physical therapy residencies in orthopedics, sports medicine and women’s health to physical therapists seeking to advance and accelerate their training. Up to two physical therapists are accepted annually for each program. Our orthopedics and sports medicine residency programs are accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association as post-professional residency programs for physical therapists. Women's Health Physical Therapy Residency

IAM and Fairview offer a one-year hockey fellowship for a physical therapist. The fellow will work side by side with experienced physical therapists and athletic trainers, surgeons, and sports performance professionals through the University of Minnesota men’s and women’s hockey teams and the Minnesota Wild. The fellow will hone her/his skills and knowledge to practice at the advanced collegiate and professional levels. Training will include direct clinical care, physician and surgery observation, and athletic training room coverage with the teams. Qualified individuals may request more information from Peter Ames at

Hockey Fellowship

IAM/Fairview and the University of Minnesota Occupational Therapy Program offer a one-year hand therapy fellowship for occupational therapists. Fellows will work side by side with experienced hand therapists, hand surgeons, and PhD OT professors to hone their skills and knowledge to practice at an advanced level in the exciting, growing field of hand therapy. Training will include direct clinical care, physician and surgery observation, graduate-level didactic coursework, research, and teaching. Fellows will conduct research and educate future therapists while under the supervision of experienced hand therapists, OT educators, and researchers. These skills will assist in clinical research and presentation. Fellows will also participate in improving community awareness of the benefits of hand therapy. Find more information:

Student affiliations

The Institute for Athletic Medicine offers clinical placements for professional students (PT, PTA, OT) and clinics across our system. Affiliations are set up through the academic institutions, in partnership with IAM and Fairview. Our clinical instructors partner with students to provide advanced training in evaluation, assessment, care planning and delivery, and injury- specific interventions. Students will have the opportunity to shadow and partner with our clinical specialists from multiple programs during their time with us. 

Volunteer opportunities

Our providers are excited to share their experience and passion for patient care with those interested in exploring health care careers. We offer students up to 24 hours of shadow time.
